"Almost. That model is the decoder, used to receive, and decipher a message. To transmit a message, it was used in tandem with this, an encoder. The key with the symbol you drew is a line feed to signal a carriage return on the sending machine."

Ironically, Jed held up a Japanese made 35mm camera and electronic flash and asked if the taking of photographs was permitted. When the scouts moved on, and the guide realized that this interesting and charming man wasn't a married father, her smiling, "Yes, please do," was also recorded on Jed's portable model Sony cassette recorder.

That evening, playing back his electronic notes, and plotting the known information upon an oversized pad of artist's newsprint sketch paper, Jed realized that 'breaking the code' of all the bits and pieces he had acquired, pointed back to two separate sources.

Nibbling the cold toppings off an extra-thick, extra-tough pizza delivered to the overpriced, but still nondescript, hotel room Jed had chosen on the advice of a cabdriver, he looked down upon the curious mixture of well dressed theatergoers, brazen street walkers, flashy hustlers, uninterested police, and gawky-eyed tourists that established that this was New York, New York. After his experience with Sheldon, the idea that he was the 'mark' in a hotel kick-back scam tickled Jed's sense of humor.

He took the time to record this observation in his daily journal, a random collection of bits and pieces for possible use in a future article or book, if that day ever came, about man adapting to his territory. "I am not comfortable conversing with New Yorkers. They have the habit of moving in past the guidelines I have established as being too close. I am used to talking with someone standing at least six feet away. I realize that words spoken softly could not be heard here, but I find that standing nose to nose, and shouting, is very threatening."

This led to the memory of Jenny's whispered "I love you," and he returned to the task at hand. One flow pen marker trail led back to "US ARMY," while the other ended up as "US AIR FORCE." The name "Anthoney" was marked by an arrow -broken by "????," surrounded by a black circle- pointing across to "Rice."

Equally baffling was that neither connection seemed to have any relationship with the newspaper clipping concerning General MacArthur's gold. To reconfirm this finding, Jed ran a tape on fast forward to listen once again to a transcription of a passage he had come across in New York City's voluminous Central Library:
