"No you didn't. This did," and he held up a bar of gold identical to the one he had found on Mt. Cascade. "I think we have found the remains of Lieutenant Rosenbaum," he continued picking up a rusted U.S. Army issue. .45 caliber automatic, "and," he walking farther back into the adit, "the person who killed him." The second skeleton lay in a crumpled heap. Jed picked up this skull, studied it a moment, and added to his previous conclusion. "This person killed Rosenbaum by bashing in his brains. The Lieutenant must have got one shot off before he died. That would explain the grotesque positions of both remains. The only question left is who and what was the Japanese man." "How do you know he was Japanese?" "Of the Mongoloid race then. See here where, due to a lack of space within the jaw, the cutting incisor teeth developed into a curved half-circle. The shovel shaped incisor is a common oriental characteristic." "Could the person have been a Chinese? A girlfriend perhaps?" "No. The pelvic shape is male. Hey, take a look at this!" They both bent down as Jed gently ripped open the rotted canvas of what Jenny had mistaken as a cartridge belt. The individual cases had been strung together about the waist. Pulling the fabric away revealed a perfect circle of glittering golden chrysanthemums. |
