Chapter 26 |

Being that the pack panniers were hanging well, and that they only had three more miles of cross country travel paralleling the 'Round the Mountain Trail' before reaching Squaw's Tit, a distinctive looking pressure ridge bordering, and overlooking, Avalanche Glacier, Jed's thoughts slipped back into a familiar refrain: "What are we doing? Will it work?" He pulled out the typewritten copy of the messages they had programmed for both Justowriters, and read it through once again. Jenny had been the one who had suggested altering the Colonel's plan of broadcasting a phony message on Kahoolawe to act as honey attracting interested bees. "Then what?" she had asked. "How would you separate those searching for the encoder to destroy evidence of America's part in starting the war with Japan, from those who have followed our trail, and murdered, for gold?" She then reminded her dad of the Japanese sport of sawanbori. In this contest a mountain climber tried to follow a stream to its source. Sometimes this took wading up chilly water, or climbing cliffs and waterfalls. The most difficult decision was to judge which branch of a creek had the strongest flow. Jenny suggested that they try and separate the two apparent streams of events that had flown from the poison spring. This had brought about a decision to invest in a duplicate system they were going to place in operation on Mount Cascade. The dialogue, laboriously punched out on Justowriter paper tape, complete with appropriate pauses, was designed to automatically broadcast between Hawaii and Oregon, pretending that Jed and Colonel MacPherson were communicating in Code Yellow by using the 1940's equipment. The revised script now read: Kealaikahiki Point. Jed. Do you read me? Avalanche Glacier. Yes. Hold that position on the dial. I read you five by five. Kealaikahiki Point. Which machine? Avalanche Glacier Had to use the mock-up. Couldn't find enough of original. Have friend with me that is an electronics expert. He is using keyboard I brought back from Panama, that's all. What you working with? |
