The weak spot seemed to be the implied suggestion that Jed needed horses to move the gold. Thinking about it, he hadn't been willing to sacrifice any horses —or even mules— to set the scene. His revised plan was to get Jenny out of the way by having her take the pack string off to a hidden meadow. This change made him worry that whoever might have listened in on the conversation would question how in the hell he had packed a generator up the mountain without any pack animals. Jed was relying on the Colonel's judgment that people who sit in offices had no idea of the difficulty involved with wilderness transportation.
