| "Yes."
"I want you to take the string home. Let The Admiral be the boss. Don't let Crazy Daisy get excited and run you over. Once you get to the station, Pokey will most likely be waiting. Shuck the saddles as best you can. Groom the horses and turn them loose in the pasture. Feed them two scoops of oats morning and night. Lock yourself in the cabin and stay put until I return." "Where will you be?" "The sheriff will probably be by to have me pack the body off the mountain. Pretend you are my live-in girl friend, and tell him I am out —on second thought, you had better keep Pokey in the barn —checking on a party of mountain climbers that are overdue, and that I will contact him as soon as possible." "Please, Jed, who, and what, and where will you be?" "Following those two backpackers." "Why?" "Intuition? Pieces of a puzzle falling into place. No answers yet. Trust me." "I will, if, you give me an honest answer to just one more question." "What?" "When you kissed me, was that part of this charade, or did it mean something?" "Truthfully, Button," Jed muttered as he swung a leg over Pokey, "I don't know." | ||
